Here come the second part of the Business Modal Canvass which include Revenue Stream, Key Resources, Key Activities, Key Partner and Cost Structure.

REVENUE STREAM

Every business must have their revenue, so our business’s revenue comes from 4 sources which are sales, services charge, delivery charge, and membership fee.

Instead of setting high price to show how prestigious our products are, we decided to set lower price so that the customers feel comfortable purchasing our product. Basically, pricing is standard for all over the marketplace. So, we can get the revenue from selling our products such as grocery, food, snacks, health care and pharmacy products.

In addition, delivery charges also help our business to gain revenue. We can get earning when we deliver our product to customer by charging them. Managing the delivery chain means managing the components that make up that delivery chain. In most organizations, the key components of the delivery chain are marketing, sales, service and fulfilment.

Moreover, we can get income from customers by membership fee. Customer can be a member in our business to get discount. With this, there will be mutually beneficial long-term relationship between the company and the customer. A salesperson is best prepared for customer interactions when an account history, a forecast and detailed information about the prospect or customer is available. This positions the salesperson with the best chance for mutually profitable business - a win for the salesperson, the customer and the organization.

Furthermore, there are service charges when customer come and have car services or medical services. This will make earning to our business too. The service function offers vast opportunities for collecting and disseminating customer information. Data gathered within the service function includes complaints and resolutions, frequency of problems, problem types, time to resolve, and so on. Using this information, organizations can effectively tailor responses to customers in all of its customer groups.

KEY RESOURCES

Key resources are the assets required to offer and deliver value proposition to the customer. In terms of assets, we need motorcycles, cash registers, supply of medicine, mechanic tools, inventory, space (building) and racks to display our items. The space or a building needed is for our retail sales. In this area, we will need racks to display our products. Not to the area for the health clinic for medical consultant service and also car service centre for our practical students worker to carry out their service. The motorcycles are to be used for our delivery service.

From the human aspect, we need doctors, mechanics, web operators, cashiers and delivery boy. For doctors, we will get the students from that Faculty of Medicine in UM. On the other hand, we can also get mechanics from the Faculty of Engineering in UM. This certainly can help us to save costs. Furthermore, we also get students from Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology to become our web operator for our website and online ordering system. We also need delivery boy to help us deliver the goods to our customers. Cashiers are also needed for the payment.

KEY ACTIVITIES

Key activities are the most important part of a company and it is a must to do to make the business works. Throughout the whole project, we know that our production is the medical and car services, and also the goods for convenience stores. We have to ensure that the goods and services that we produce is high quality and high efficient. Hence, we will cooperate with Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Engineering to provide the car and medical services as the usually the UM students are high quality. In addition, we will also make sure it’s professional services and so that the customer will be loyal to our services. In the case of convenience store, we will do the system like 7-11 convenience store and we are more advanced because we will include the online ordering system.

For the workers problem, we will have recruitment and interview session for it. The interview session is specially for those who are interested to work with us in our health clinic and car service centre to ensure quality of sevices and products we are providing and thus increase the customer confidence

For networking purpose, we will publicize our business on the social website such as Facebook, Twitter and so on to make our business connect with our clients and also provide more information to them. On top of that, we will have our own website and will update our on-going promotion from time to time to ensure that our customers get the first hand information on our latest promotion. In addition, we will also use the online ordering system for their convenience. We will also maintain our websites and the online ordering system from time to time.

We will advertise our business by posting the poster, banner or even UM magazine around our campus to make them be informed and more attractive. In addition, we will also do road show once a month in each faculty especially for the convenience store with our promotion items of the month. Moreover, we know that people are easily to attract by some creative events. Hence, we will promote our business by doing some unique events like flash mob to catch the eyeballs of customers. We will also choose an ambassador as the representative of our services to advertise our services. This can create the image and also the direction for UM 365°.

KEY PARTNERS

We divided our key partners into 2 parts which are labour, supplier, landlords and marketing. For labour, our key partners are the students from Faculty of Engineering, especially the department of Mechanical Engineering, Faculty of Medical studies, and other students who want to earn extra income. The students from Faculty of Engineering will help out as the mechanics for our car service. However, the students from faculty of Medical will assist in our health clinic. With this, all the students do not only earn additional pocket money, however they will gain hand on learning experience at the same time.

For supplier, we will cooperate and have a partnership with Guardian, who have their own product band on skin-care products, hair-care products and many others. In this way, we will gain more reputation for UM 365° and cheaper cost of purchasing those products. On the other hand, for the food and beverages supplier, we have a list of companies that could be our supplier on different products such as Kraft Malaysia Sdn Bhd, Shoon Fatt Biscuit & Confectionary Factory Sdn. Bhd., The Italian Baker Sdn Bhd and many others.

Additionally, HEP will also be one of our main partners as our landlord. This is because we will need a space in UM to set up our store where we planned to set up  UM 365°  at the Perdana Siswa Complex.

For publicity and marketing, we will collaborate with LOL and The Pioneer. LOL is a radio program under OneFM which can help student to promote on their activities for free. Not only that, we will also make a video to be advertise in Asia Media TV that all the students who take RapidKL will watch it. Besides that, we will publicise UM 365° on The Pioneer, our very own newspaper in UM. All these activity will able to create exposure to UM population to know about UM 365°.

COST STRUCTURE

There are two costs incurred in conducting our business which is fixed cost and variable cost. Our fixed costs are rental, salaries for office manager, electricity, tools and equipment such as machines and motorcycle. Then, our variable cost will be cost of utilities, petrol (mileage), cost of purchasing accessories and products.

The most important cost inherent in our business model is the cost of buying accessories and use parts of cars and the products for medicine/ health care/ pharmacy. However, according to the economics of scale, the more you buy, the cheaper you will get. So, we can contact large car part suppliers and wholesale dealers to negotiate a discount if we buy in large amount. We only take inventories of the item that we really needed such as common items: oil, filters and gloves on hand. Moreover, for the medicine part, we may cooperation with our partner like Guardian to get a lower cost.

The key resource which is most expensive is the cost of mechanical tools (capital). We need machine to start up our business. However, to make it cost-driven, we can consider rent or buying second hand machine from other motorbike business which decided to change their machines.

The most expensive key activities will be the roadshow. In order to carry out this event, we have to buy some special or outstanding accessories for exhibition and rent a suitable location. Besides that, we need to buy many resources such as brochures, pamphlets, flies and banner. As a solution, we can either find sponsors to support our event.

Reflection?? or Shadow??

The first thing that came into my mind is,
"FINALLY, I'M DONE EDITING IT and READY TO SEND IT TO SKET!!!!!!!!!"

Throughout this whole mentoring APK class by Mr. Bernard, time passes really fast. Although these few weeks, there are many challenges for him to conduct the class smoothly due to unexpected event that we would have to attend and also his own business. However, this does not bring me down to know more entrepreneurship field from him. Entrepreneurship is not what we can learn from text books nor lecture. It's all about start doing it and guided with experienced people who have undergo all the process. Nost of the school wanted to create awareness on entrepreneurship among students, but do theory do help? NO? I love listen to story, that's why i like the way Mr. Bernard teach in the class. Real life experience, guidance, mentoring... These are all we need and that is how it should go.

He always like to stress in the class that there is no right or wrong answer. I am totally agree with him as everything is the matter of perception. It is just how you look at it. Foe example, corruption, most of us think that it is a bad thing but I heard a statement from my friend that there is a professor actually saying that corruption is good as it will increase the international trade for a country. This shows clearly that, for every incident  I don't believe only one-way of looking at it.

Another thing that he always mentioned is that idea is cheap. For this, I don't really see eye to eye with him fully. Idea is cheap only after we have gotten the start-up modal and capital for it, after that it's the way that we organize or handle the business. On the other hand, idea is priceless when we do not have any capital or modal!! =D

If you realise the title of this post, I do mentioned about shadow, why do I say so and what am I trying to carry out? I think what Mr. Bernard and Pn. Ponmalar had taught does on only keep in my mind, however, it's now following me as my shadow. Business Modal Canvass, right or wrong theory, flowers, black rose, Starbucks and many others idea. All these will follow me along when there's light or I may say it as idea to be implemented. Thus, it form something that cannot be separate.

I will try my best to make full use with all the inputs given and hopefully my create my own wonderful future. ^^

Tada~~

It's ME!!! MAE VIN =D

Hey there!! I guess you may have go through most of the the biodata or the profile of my other team members and you ust have wonder where am I right??? Here am I to tell you a little bit of myself.

Oh well. Obviously, my name is CHONG MAE VIN. Most of the time, people find difficulty to pronounce my name before they get to know the spelling of my name. Is that a good thing??? I guess so, because people will be like, "Ya... You are the girl with the name Mae what right???" Does that really 'good'? Depends on how you look at it. Some of you may think that they can't even remember my name, but for me, at least the person remember who am I! =D

I always love to ask people about their first impression on me. Below are most of the feedback I got.
"You looks really fierce and I don't dare to talk to you."
"Ego is the best word ro describe you."
"Wow... Charismatic? Leadership?? I guess I can spot these characteristics on you!"
"Do you know how to talk??? I never expect there will be interaction between us."

However, first impression does not imply anything. It is still the communication and interaction that matter.

Enough with boasting myself, here come some factual information about me!

I am girl who born in Kuala Lumpur on 28th July 1992 and live in Klang, a city famous with its Klang River. 2 years of pre-school, followed my 6 years in SJK(C), 5 years in girls school, 1 year in matriculation and lastly, I end up here UNIVERSITY OF MALAYA taking degree in Economics. There are a lot of ups and downs in my education life especially after my SPM, however, I am happy to end up at who am I now. I don't know when will I be in the future, but at least at the moment I feel comfortable and grateful at where am I now.

I guess there are still many more about me that you would like to know, just come and talk to me and I guess we will have a long chat.

Tada~~

Questions????

when the mentor session first started,
there are so many questions,
why do we need this mentoring session?
Why do we need to listen to those people who are not our lecturers?
Keep on talking non-stop in front, what these people want from us, like I care?

instead of asking this way,
why not the other way round,
Why are these people willing to sacrifice their time to come and assist us, like they care?

Yeah, the answer is WE CARE and we can feel it THEY CARE, too....

these people, willing to share with us what they have learnt,
these people, willing to guide us when we are in a blur situation,
these people, willing to help us when we face difficulties...

NOW, its time to show to these people what we have actually learnt from these few week's mentor session, and to prove that they are not wasting their time!

WHO are these people?? yeah, our mentors....
Bernard, what had we learnt? curious?? stay tune...

Mirror mirror on the wall

Mirror mirror on the wall
reflects the sound deep inside my heart....

After few weeks being together as a group to work on our business idea, may be at first we are being grouped together not as what we wished, yet we try our best to fit ourselves in the group as the strongest survive!
Though we faced many challenges during these few weeks, may be some of us get to give up when facing difficulties, or why should we do all these things....(bla bla bla), but it is actually a normal thing to go through ups and downs during the learning process, and the most precious thing we gain through this process is how we overcome it, for example how we self motivate to continue moving but not giving up halfway, and I truly believe that this process will benefit all of us in our future life. So, finally we still manage to make things done on time. =)

What work had we actually come out?? Stay tuned~ ^_^

MY REFLECTION...

I have learned many things for the past few weeks in this APK class. Our mentor,Mr.Bernard taught us a lot of things about the entrepreneurship and business world. The first class happened to be an eye opener for me in business field. Before this I have no knowledge about entrepreneurship and business. Mr.Bernard induced my curiosity level towards this subject. He approached us in a new way by having questionnaires. Furthermore, he has not demotivated us if we answered the questions wrongly.
As we all know, APK is all about group tasks. Thus, Mr.Bernard very often carried out group discussions which directly helped us for the main task. It created a very good bonding, sharing of ideas, and pouring of knowledge among my precious groupmates. There are two reasons for me to successfully create the blog which are my lecturers and my groupmates. Therefore, I take this golden opportunity to thank each and every souls.

Business Model Canvass (Part 1)

This first part of the post will basically cover the first four segments which are Customer Segments, Value Proposition, Channels and Customer Relationships.

CUSTOMER SEGMENT

Our target customers are basically from University of Malaya which covers the students and staffs in UM. Our primary customer segment is the student of UM especially those who are staying in campus area. According to the statistics updated on January 2012 in UM official website, there are 26,018 students. 13,576 of them are local undergraduates and 8,871 are local postgraduates However for international students, there are 804 international undergraduates followed by 2,767 international postgraduates.  All the students are from different faculties, academics, institutes and centres. Among the 26,018 students, almost 46% of them are staying in campus. We targeted them as our main customer segment because they are the main consumer in UM.

Our second customer segment is the staffs of UM which includes the lecturers and administrators in office of different faculties, divisions, and residential colleges. According to the data in UM official website, there are 6,205 staffs in UM. They have been chosen as our secondary customer segment because they are the second major population in UM.

Not to forget, other workers who work in UM such as the workers in café, photocopy shops and many other.

In short, our customer segment covers the whole population in UM.

VALUE PROPOSITION

The value proposition is the reason why a consumer turns to one company over another. There are several factors which will attract customers to UM 365°. To start with, it’s the element of newness. Before this there was no existence of this type of business centre in UM. The ‘wow’ factor which it holds which is 24 hour operating system which covers almost all the necessary services.

Next, will be the element of accessibility which will hold the customers. UM 365° is located at Perdana Siswa Complex which is the heart of UM. All the UM students can easily spot the place without any directions furthermore we are providing 24 hours of delivery service.

On the other hand, will be the price factor. We do consider that our main customers will be the UM students who are only depend on their loan for living in UM. Thus, the price for our products and services will be reasonable and at cheaper rate.

Lastly, we are also offering online ordering system so that students will be able endure our services and products without time constriction and place. This can allow our customers to purchase the goods that they need easily.

CHANNEL

In order to allow our products to reach our customers, we have identify a few channels which cover the publicity, sales, delivery.

For the matter of publicity, we will cooperate and partner with a few media company such as OneFM, Asia Media TV and The Pioneer (UM Newspaper). All these parties will help us to reach out to more customers and increase our exposure rate on media. Not only that, the famous social website, Facebook, will also be our channel to deliver the latest promotion of our company to our customers.

For the sales aspect, we will reach our customer through web sales and also retail shop. Web sales will be our indirect distribution channel since our customer can reach the internet everywhere around the campus. So we will build an official website for our business, where we can receive pre-order from the customer since we also provide delivery. For retail shop, our location is very strategic as we mentioned previously. With both of these sales channels, our customers can reach our shop and get our service.

For services aspect, phone call is one of the distribution channels too. This can be further explain using our car service. For example, when one of customer’s had broken down around in the campus he can just make a call to us so that we can offer him our service anytime when he needs.

CUSTOMER RELATIONSHIP

Customer Relationship in the business model canvas actually describes the types of relationships a company establishes with specific Customer Segments.

In order to maintain a good relationship, UM 365° plans to introduce a membership system in which every UM-ians are qualified to apply our membership for free. This allows them to receive any news from UM 365° especially news on offer promotion.

Second, we also have a reward system, where UM 365° member card holders can collect points in their membership cards. These points actually allow them to get the priority for our purchase with purchase policy.

Third, we also offer a free delivery system with the condition that they purchase in a single receipt of not less than RM20. This is very convenience for our customers as they do not need to purposely come out to buy things such as foods during night time.

Lastly, in order to maintain a two way relationships between our company and customer, we will set up a Facebook page to collect feedback from customers and also deliver our news to customers.

Here ends the first part of it!! =)

Challenges to implement the business plan

  • To get approach to a suitable location for the One Stop Shop (in close proximity to all UM students)
  •  To access to the sufficient source of workers (to serve the 24-Hour service
  •  To have collaborations with various key partners: retailers, Guardian, pharmaceutical suppliers, One FM, Asia Media, The pioneer, Tune Talk
  •  Designing and operates an online ordering system
  •  Keep updates on the Facebook Page daily (to held customer relationship)
  • To diversify the revenue stream: delivery services, sales & services, membership fees

REFLECTION

Throughout the past few weeks for APK lessons, I have received lots of inputs and quotations from our mentor, Mr. Bernard. ^^

Entrepreneur ≠ entrepreneurial --To be entrepreneurial doesn’t mean that you need to be an entrepreneur -- Think out of the box

He has ever mentioned “There are no right or wrong in entrepreneurship” when confronting our questions about the business plan…. unless you are losing money in your business ; )

To startup and run a business idea,

  1. Define a good problem
  2. Realize a simple and feasible solution (social-oriented/ technology-driven)
  3. Working with awesome team members (Aw2some APK2.0) on the blueprint that details how our ideas will be brought to the market.
